Breastfeeding and Lactation

Breastfeeding is often described as natural, but that doesn’t mean it always comes naturally. Feeding your newborn can come with many questions, learning curves, and moments of uncertainty. Every family’s experience is personal, and feeding journeys often look different from one another.

While The Cradle Company no longer offers lactation consulting services, we are passionate about providing trusted information and supportive resources for families during pregnancy and throughout the postpartum period.

Whether you are preparing to breastfeed before your baby arrives or navigating challenges along the way, understanding what to expect and knowing that support is available can help make breastfeeding feel more manageable and empowering.

Breastfeeding is often something parents expect to happen naturally, yet for many families it takes time, patience, and support to find what works for you and your baby. In the early days, both you and your baby are learning together, and it’s normal to have challenges along the way.

Friends and family can offer encouragement and shared experience, but breastfeeding challenges like finding a comfortable latch, trying different feeding positions, or understanding milk supply are often easier to navigate with guidance grounded in current lactation knowledge.

Some babies need time to learn effective feeding patterns, while parents may need reassurance as they build confidence and adjust to their baby’s needs.

Many families choose to find support from certified lactation professionals who are trained to assess feeding, offer practical adjustments, and help parents better understand what is happening during this stage. Having the right information can make feeding feel less stressful and allow families to move forward in a way that feels most natural for them.

You are not alone in this postpartum experience.

advanced support

Many parents find that breastfeeding feels more manageable when they have the right support around them. If questions or challenges arise, working with a qualified lactation professional can provide reassurance and practical guidance.

Lactation Educators or Counselors can often help families with common feeding questions, early education, and general support. More complex feeding concerns are often best addressed by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), who has advanced training in lactation care.

While The Cradle Company no longer provides lactation consulting services directly, we are always happy to connect families with trusted lactation professionals when specialized support is needed.

Expert help for a calm and confident start to parenthood

postpartum care

In addition to feeding support, many families benefit from postpartum care during the early weeks at home. The Cradle Company offers experienced postpartum doulas, newborn care specialists, and paediatric sleep consultants who support parents as they recover, rest, and adjust to life with a new baby.

These professionals help create calm routines, promote postpartum healing, and provide hands-on guidance as families adjust and settle into life with a new baby.

Having compassionate, experienced care in place can ease the transition into parenthood, helping families feel more confident while reminding parents that they don’t have to navigate the postpartum period alone.

What does a lactation consultant do?

A lactation consultant is a qualified professional who helps families navigate breastfeeding and infant feeding. While breastfeeding is natural, it can also come with challenges, especially in the early days after birth.
Lactation consultants can offer guidance on latch and positioning, milk supply, pumping, feeding schedules, and other common questions that arise during the newborn period.

Some families choose to connect with a lactation consultant during pregnancy to prepare for breastfeeding, while others need support after their baby is born.
You may consider speaking with a lactation consultant if breastfeeding feels painful, your baby is having difficulty latching, you have concerns about milk supply, or you simply want reassurance and guidance as you learn what works best for you and your baby.

During a consultation, a lactation consultant will usually ask about your feeding experience and any concerns you may have. They may observe a feeding session, assess latch and positioning, and discuss feeding patterns.
Based on what they observe, they can provide practical suggestions and techniques to help make feeding more comfortable.

Yes. Lactation consultants support a wide range of feeding approaches. In addition to breastfeeding, they can provide guidance on pumping, storing breast milk, bottle feeding, and combination feeding.
Their role is to help families find feeding routines that feel supportive for both parents and baby.
