A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, and delivery. They help parents prepare by discussing birth preferences and providing guidance on comfort techniques, coping strategies, and decision-making.
During labor, your chosen doula stays by your side, offering reassurance, encouragement, and acting as a calm advocate for your wishes. They provide hands-on support and guidance with positioning, breathing techniques, massage, and relaxation strategies. While they do not perform medical procedures, their presence can create a more positive, supported birth experience for you and your family.
It’s best to hire a birth doula early in your pregnancy, often in the second trimester, so you have plenty of time to meet, plan, and build a supportive relationship. This allows the doula to guide you through prenatal preparation, help create a birth plan, and provide ongoing education and reassurance leading up to labor.
A birth doula supports you during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, focusing on emotional guidance, comfort techniques, birth preparation, and advocacy in the hospital or birth center. A postpartum doula provides support after your baby is born, helping with newborn care, feeding guidance, and postpartum recovery.
